An adventure
Mayfly is in equal parts adventure, and coming of age story set on the canals of the mid to late sixties where two people from very different backgrounds find themselves alone due to unforeseen circumstances.
On the suggestion of a trusted friend the two main characters end up working together, both to carry a small cargo by water, and to evade some decidedly unsavoury people that are in pursuit. The situation creates trust between them and with this comes the chance for them both to forge friendship and resolve issues that have dogged them throughout their lives.
Their teamwork, with Mayfly almost a third person, leads to an easy going lifestyle that neither want to give up when the adventure draws to a close. Click on book to buy your copy (Paperback or Kindle)
The main characters
Jim Stratton is a quiet and unassuming person. From a broken home, he has never spent long in the same place, and has been in council care on occasions. Despite this he is generally happy and optimistic in outlook, but prefers his own company most of the time.
Amanda Donaldson is around a year younger than Jim. She has enjoyed a stable home life, and is from a wealthy background, though any money there was has now gone. She is a lot more talkative than Jim and can be quite impetuous. She has looked into a number of alternative faiths, is a strict vegetarian and, though an outwardly bright person, there are some events in her past that still give her nightmares.
Mayfly. Though not a character as such, Mayfly is the fifteen foot six inch clinker built plywood cabin cruiser that draws Jim into the adventure, and Amanda to Jim. The craft has a personality, as do all boats, especially those made of wood. She repays Jim's initial kindness by providing both shelter and companionship for him, and seems to accept Amanda as part of the team happily.
